Veteran All Gave Some Some Gave All Polo Shirt
Standing along U.S. Route 220 on the grounds of the state prison complex near Cresaptown is a simple brick memorial that pays tribute to veterans of the U.S. Armed forces, with the message, “All gave some, some gave all.”
Just six words, their order cleverly reversed, their meaning clear. Everyone who served did give some, in terms of personal sacrifice, lives shattered by grievous injuries sustained while on active duty, or time away from family and other less-than-appealing aspects of military life, and for that all Americans should be grateful, but today is set aside to honor the men and women who gave everything — their very lives — to ensure our safety and freedom and provide assistance or protection to people in other countries around the world.
The phrase on the handsome monument near the prisons is attributed to Howard William Osterkamp of Dent, Ohio, a Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. During that time, he experienced heavy combat in Korea with his unit, the C Company, 5th Regimental Combat Team.
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a time to honor those who paid the ultimate price while in the military service of our country, particularly those who succumbed in battle or died as a result of wounds they received during combat.
Originally known as Decoration Day, its start can be traced to the years following the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971, and many Americans observe it by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. It also marks the unofficial beginning of the summer season.
Traditions also include placing flags or laying wreaths on military graves and a national moment of remembrance at 3 p.M. (local time) and wearing red poppies.
