Another inconsistency was geography. The account tagged the location of its first post, on Nov. 25, 2020, as London. When Mitchell privately messaged the account in May, the person operating the account said they lived in Phoenix. One photo showed pine trees, while others featured tropical flowers, suggesting entirely different parts of the world.
But noticing these clues would require combing through months of posts with a skeptical eye.
Problems setting up a visitWhen Mitchell messaged the Instagram account, the person operating it said three female, mini-sized goldendoodles were available for $1,000 each and answered questions about size, weight and age.
Mitchell scheduled a visit to see the puppies in two days. The account sent him a residential address in Ahwatukee.
The next morning, however, @perfect_doodless urged Mitchell to pay a $300 deposit to lock in the purchase.

"I have a family wanting to reserve all the puppies remaining," the Instagram account said. "As much as I want you to have one of these beautiful puppy's (sic) we are a business and won't hesitate to give them out."
Mitchell sent the money through Venmo as instructed to an account named @Colin-Arquette, reiterating his desire to meet the puppies the next day.
But hours before their scheduled visit, Mitchell received a message from @perfect_doodless canceling.
