Oakmont Country Club Map Layout Rug

Interior decor evoking the style, theme and vibrant colors of America’s Southwest is a commitment to hues and patterns. Whitewashed furniture is an ideal backdrop for all color palettes and the launching pad for richly toned accessories and textiles. Delicacy mixed with the ruggedness of the Desert Southwest creates a juxtaposition that’s intriguing, warm and welcoming.

Southwest Influences

Various themes imbue Southwest decor. Consider the heritage of the Native Americans, with their bright orange and turquoise headdresses and jewelry. Western ranch history, where rough iron, wood, hides and driftwood dominate, is another decorating option. And don’t forget the glorious hues found in the deserts of the Southwest, where terra cotta, sky blue, pale pink and sage green reflect the colors of nature.

Paint

Surround your whitewashed furniture with color. Paint the wall behind the bed a deep, glossy turquoise, steel gray or sage green, the trim glossy white and the remaining walls the lightest hue of the feature wall color. Another alternative is to add glossy ochre or bronze Venetian plaster, evoking the feeling of adobe.

Textiles

Bedding is your focal point and should immediately convey the theme of your decor. Native American woven textiles carry your color theme. A more calming look is achieved using watercolor shades of the desert, such as pale bronze, sand, cream or butter yellow. A sage green duvet, woven as color-on-color, adds texture. Select a bed skirt that falls to the floor and enhances the color of the bedding. Choices for window coverings include patterned weaves, soft linen or interior shutters painted to match the walls and inset with fabric that coordinates with the bedding.

Accessories

Accessories carry your theme and make a statement or hide comfortably in the background. Go overboard with a ranch theme: Add rough-hewn iron hardware to doors, hang Western hats on iron hooks for display, place a large trunk at the foot of the bed for extra bedding and pillows and stand a pair of well-worn cowboy boots in a corner for effect. Turquoise, earth brown and sage are brought to life with a glossy-finished red clay pot displayed in a corner and additional red hints on dresser tops and nightstands. The whitewashed furniture can also be trimmed in a Southwestern color of your choice or roughened with sandpaper to create a weathered look.

Flooring

White, light wood, terra cotta tiles, Berber or sculpted carpeting in a light color harmonize with a Southwest theme. Add a colorful area rug that picks up your color scheme or a sisal rug either at the foot or on both sides of the bed. Hang a Native American tapestry on the wall or place it on the floor in an area that doesn’t see much traffic.
