What to do if you still want to get your special dose of the island’s charms, despite COVID?

I have the answer: A visit to the ABC stores – or more specifically, its popular website.

Not familiar with ABC stores? You should be. I can tell you from experience – with my 26 media visits to Hawaii in 25 years – that no trip to our 50th state is complete without a stop at the ABC stores. These charming boutiques – which are practically on every corner of Hawaii – are chock-a-block with some of the most endearing and unique Hawaiian merchandise. If you can’t get to Hawaii right now – a simple visit to the ABC website can whet your appetite, and actually fulfill your desires, with its oceans of adorable island goodies. (For me personally, no trip to Hawaii has officially started unless I visit an ABC store and purchase some guava juice and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts to snack on.)

Why the name ABC stores? I interviewed Mr. Paul Kosasa, the President of ABC stores, whose parents had founded the brand back in 1949, and opened their first store in 1964. “My parents wanted something simple to remember,” Mr. Kosasa told me. “They wanted something that would easily roll off the tongue of foreign tourists – and also be easily found in the phone book.” ABC – what could be easier to remember than that? Today there are about 65 ABC stores throughout Hawaii, and about 15 more in Las Vegas, Guam and Saipan.

Mr. Kosasa commented on how ABC’s inventory became very popular last year with the onslaught of the pandemic. “Hawaii stopped all travel,” he said. “Many ABC stores closed as there were no tourists….But our e-commerce picked up quite quickly, as people still wanted Hawaiian merchandise. Especially aloha face masks, which are our Number One bestseller. They took off.”

These made-in-Hawaii 100% canvas lightweight breathable face masks feature assorted aloha and tribal prints, and retail for about $7.99 each.

In fact, the stores carry a wealth of made-in-Hawaii products, which include macadamia nuts, chocolates, coffees, teas, juices, honeys, spreads, syrups, seasonings, island snacks, sun care and cosmetics.
