To me books were an imaginary life to visit - but real to me while reading. And while immersed in the books, becoming a part of the story, seeing and feeling what the characters felt. And thus I learned that some people were not treated the same as others, and my innocent heart hurt for them and felt how wrong it was and so by osmosis I knew not to treat others that way. Just describing people in the setting they were in at the time does not make a person racist, sometimes it is a subtle way to present things in a way that others can see the lives of others and develop empathy. You don't have to whack children over the head with simplistic slogans. If they are truly taught to read and comprehend so that they can read the rich resources of literature it gives them a gateway into the lives of others that can't be closed without some serious reprogramming. And that reprogramming happens at times. Many, if not most, of the people committing hate crimes are people who have been marginalized, neglected, hurt or been bullied in some way themselves. That makes them vulnerable to the propaganda of radical groups that operate on a false premise of acceptance and inclusion, with level of acceptance and affirmation increasing in direct proportion to the degree that they drink the kool-aid. This is how reprogramming works - similar to the way war or political prisoners are reprogrammed. Only the work of breaking the kids down has already been done for them by the environment the kids have grown up in. They have been isolated and belittled by bullying, neglect or ostracism., whether at home, school, sports or other area of their environment. So they are already ready to be recruited to false ideologies. Hate and hurt breed hate. And oddly a search for love and acceptance can also breed hate if subverted. The only way to change that is to model and teach love, compassion and acceptance. Teaching division only breeds more hate and lack of acceptance. Books can help children walk in other children's shoes by letting them see what they share in common and then when they see differences in treatment, environment or abilities they will see something that needs to be either accepted and celebrated, improved or fixed or changed. If you raise empathetic children who can be compassionate to others it changes the big picture.
Discussions regarding racism are hard, yes, but so necessary if we ate ever to move forward to a better world!! He’s dead. So many things were accepted in the past. No, doesn’t make it right. But until you know better you do what you know. We can beat him up about his past or we can look at how many of his books taught inclusion and tolerance. If you always stay in the past and refuse to move forward then aren’t you saying there’s no learning from our mistakes. I’d like to think that we want to move forward. How about letting his books teach inclusion and tolerance. His past is just that..
